Heading out on this rainy day!

I am on the lookout for a better digital cam cos my present Samsung cam acts as if I used lousy batteries although I tried using all brands of brand new and rechargeable batteries.  I suspect the model's flawed cos I saw bad reviews of it on a camera website.

Too late!  Next time, I know better - must always check for online reviews before I purchase any electronics.  :)

Also getting another charger for my current Nokia mobile phone.  I have NO IDEA where the charger went.  I can only guess how it got missing!  Next time, I will also be more careful of my own personal belongings.

Just got 2 Free PDF ebooks!

The first ebook contents:  How do you get enough sustaining
traffic to your website if you don’t have thousands of dollars
to spend on advertising or search engine optimization to
compete with the big guys in your market?

The 2nd ebook contents:  The single biggest factor in getting
higher search engine rankings is having enough incoming links
to your site and right link (or anchor) text on them.  It is often
95% of the determining reason as to how your Website ranks.
So, getting incoming links is vital for any Website to pull-in big
profits from  the search engines.

But, up until now, having lots of links was only possible for the
big-guys.  The small guys, like you and me, could never possibly
hope to get flooded with huge numbers of links without a
massive amount of work.

Your only options were to:
• Build huge reciprocal-link directories,
• Purchase expensive one-way links that cost an arm and a leg,
• Or write and distribute award-winning articles

You can download the 2 ebooks:  1st  :: 2nd
In order to read a pdf ebook, you will need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your pc.

A few "advanced" SEO tips you can use!

Here are a few "advanced" SEO tips!

Comment in blogs that:
1. have the same theme as yours. For example, find dog-related sites or blogs if yours is about dogs or pets
2. have DOFOLLOW tags so that search engines can count the "thumbs-up" from that site to your site.
3. have higher Google PR ranks than yours. Example, it is better to have a comment in a PR 5 or 6 site/blog linking back to your site, rather than 100 comments in PR 1 blogs.
If comments fullfill the above, the comment is counted as a quality backlink.  The more quality backlinks you have back to your site, the higher your page rank will be/become.

Restrain from having paid links in your blogs if you can help it.  Paid links diffuses Google's perception of blog/site popularity.

Never have receprocal links with sites that are blacklisted (from spamming etc).

The first paragraph of your blog entry should have as many keywords as possible.  For example, if my site is about music, my first blog entry should ideally contain words or a mixture of different words related to 'music', 'mp3', 'iPod', 'music jukebox', 'top billboard american songs', etc

And always have good original content in your site or blog!

My webhosting "history"

I had an old domain hosted with Mister.net but I gave up hosting with them because back then they offered only 2000mb hosting with no MySql  for a fixed price.  (They've since come a long way and improved!)  Don't mistaken - I am all praises for Mister.net and will consider them if current free webhoster does not fullfill my requirements.

(BTW, my Posterous blog [freely-hosted] will always remain here cos I love the ability to blog via email, and it send to my Twitter account automatically so my followers in Twitter know when I have blogged about something wierd.)

I tried Zymic (post-to-host) but uploading files via FTP is a joke.  So I self-deleted my account with them but not before praising them for their extensive Photoshop tutorials (in their forum).

Skynet...whatever I can't remember the full name - another Post2host.  Committed a mistake of resetting all forum posts as and when they like.  I didn't bother to request for free hosting with them.

I was also hosted with another webhoster who refunded me my US$15 (annual hosting) when they suspended my account.  There was NO WARNING before suspension that I was overusing CPU resources.  (How was I to know when I was overusing?  I had asked what constituted overuse of cpu resources but was not given any explaination.)  The US$15 refund did them good - I am not naming them here!  lol

I was also hosted by Wiizdom (post-to-host).  Was top poster & contributor (I made an ebook with their URL in it in the hope of promoting of their hosting service - so much for being "useful" there!) and I was one of the few people who donated to them.  But a few things happened which made me left them:
1.  My VIP (donor) title was stripped only after 4 months.
2.  I had difficulty accessing forum so imagine I had no way to post to forum, which meant I was unable to keep my hosting.
3.  They didn't allow forum members to post internal forum thread URLs even (in their shoutbox) which they have by now removed totally.  No tagbox and no shoutbox anymore.
4.  They resetted forum a couple of times in the past and that meant whatever posts made previously were all wiped out cleanly.   (Many good forums only "delete" posts that are more than a year old.  The best forums on the net keep past years' forum posts in archives.)

I feel Wiizdom is also not able to take truthful criticisms - their 24hours customer support service is a farce and not the truth.  Once it took them 3 full days to reply me.

And there's also Trap17 (post to host).  One of the moderators took offense when I suggested for him to switch back to Windows XP (he asked what to do cos he was using windows vista).  I was surprised at his abrupt rudeness, cos why bother to ask if you didn't want opinions from other forum members?  From then on, he searched for some of my 30+ posts and found 2 to have "pliagarised content" (just a few sentences I copied from some health sites).  He was trying his best to make it difficult for me to attain the required credits to get free hosting.  I checked some webhost review sites and found that they had several negative reviews as well, which included "rude forum moderators".  I never return to Trap17 again although I've made a few net friends from there.

I tried many free webhosting sites...many either limited file types for uploading and had some kind of file size limit.  Most were of little use to me since they offered less than 500mb of free hosting.  Some offered 1 gig hosting but the bandwidth was pathetic.  Well, beggers for free stuff can't choose!!

That's my webhosting adventures!

My mum

Status:  Almost getting back my webhosting but with another webhosting service provider

Also, just argued with my dysfunctional mum today.  lol

I had a bad day from the start.  I had terminated a mobile phone service (last payment in Oct).  So imagine my "horror" when I received a legal letter from Starhub's lawyer yesterday (barely a month later on 12th Nov 2008), asking to settle SG$101 payment.

I just wanted to pay at an AXN service station and inform Starhub via phone that I refuse to pay the legal fees as it was unreasonable.  My mum insisted I went down and make a fuss.

I was like, "What's the point?  Either way I've decided not to go with Starhub, I had another phone plan with another service-provider anyway."  But knowing my mum best, I acceded her request.

She tagged along with me to Starhub's headquarters just behind where Centrepoint was.  My old lady almost had her head injured as I turned back in time and shouted to her - that barge that went up and down for cars to enter/exit from (carpark) almost came down on her head.  She managed to avoid it in time because she heard me.

She caught up with me and started grumbling and blaming me for her near-death fright, and I thought, "I was only a few steps ahead of you mum.  You've refused to be pushed in a wheelchair, nor did you want a walking stick.  So how am I supposed to dictate where and when you put your feet?"

This day, it was very unlike me cos I usually call and double-confirm appointment and address.  I didn't call, neither did I make an appointment.  So when we finally reached Starhub headquarters, I was kinda pissed when they told me I had to go to one of their customer service shops.  They apologised for the inconvenience, I and mum proceeded to Plaza Singapura.

Okie....big fuss made at Plaza Singapura (got a ticket and had waited less than 7 minutes to be served).  I was told that I should be paying lesser than the required $101 but that they needed to have their internal revenue department waiving the legal fees.  I was advised by the friendly Starhub staff to hold on to the payment.  My mum insisted I paid off the bill!

Okie, again I acceded to her request cos Starhub is gonna refund via cheque for overpayment anyway.  I paid SG$90.

Pet Lovers' Centre was also there!  Oh all the qute qute hammies were there and I itched to get a few again since my last hammie was suspected of "murder" (he had a clean horizontal cut on his tummy and had his poor intestines sticking out but there was no sign of blood for which I suspected a **boy who we were looking after for 3 months since his mum tried to strangle him DID IT - he's since returned to his father who then later sent him to a boys' home for other behavioural problems).

I woulda spent the rest of the early evening window-shopping but I couldn't.

Again I acceded to my mum's request to rush home so she can catch her favourite news and TV seriel drama.  I had barely sat in the room for a minute when I realised we forgot to mail my brother's READERS' DIGEST envelope.  She suggested I post it since I have not yet changed into my usual home t-shirt and shorts.

I said,"Me?"  I was thinking of the tidbids to buy but more importantly, I suddenly remembered I was waiting for an overseas phone call from someone at 7pm and this person only had my home phone number.  The phone call was a confirmation for a viewing date and time for a walkup apartment in the East area.  It meant $$$$ to me.  I was about to call on someone (someone whom I would name as 'JO') to run the mailing errand.

Before I could summon Jo into the room, my mum grumbled and said that I am useless, blah blah...and she will go mail the letter now on her own.  In the past she would say stupid things like,"My children never support me!"  And I would go,"Oh, then how did you get the money to buy groceries and stuff to cook???  You make it sound as if we ill-treat you!"

I feel that it's not that we kids don't appreciate her, it's she NOT appreciating us.  I had enough of her treating me like a doormat and said,"Mum, can you please stop getting angry?  Did you even give me a chance to call Jo into the room???"

She picked up my brother's envelope and proceeded to tear it open.  She was in one of her temper tantrums.  I said."Mum are you out of your mind?  Where are you going to get another no-postage required envelope like this?"

And she was like,"Useless envelope!  Causing so much trouble.  Tear you up!"

This time, I snatched the envelope away from her.

Guess what?  She picked up a stool and threw it.  It flew towards the door and for a minute I wished it went straight to the TV I bought for her.  It would have been ample penalty for an over-sized over-grown kid in an old body.

It was at this moment I told her,"Stop acting like a spoilt brat mum!  Can't I even have the freedom of mailing it tomorrow?  Why are you so bloody inflexible??  It's only a Reader Digests' reorder form and cheque!!"

She continued being angry; even after 3 hours she challenged me to complain to my brother.  I looked at her and shook my head.  Kid!

My mum's main problem is, she can get angry over the most mundane of problems, finger-pointing and not being able to see the light even at age 72!  One of her childhood friends who played with her told me,"Do you know Kelly?  You mum hit me when I was a kid!  She hit me!  You look at her and she can fool almost everyone cos she looks like a teacher.  But she is damn fierce lo!"

I looked at the lady who brings me grandaunt food daily.  She had a smirk on her face.

I smiled and said,"Yes, I know."

I've put up with her "gross misconduct" for as long as I could remember.  Everytime she insists on something (sometimes she makes detrimental decisions or do things that makes me cringe) I try to have things her way.

My friends said that if I make it a little more difficult for her to get her monthly allowance may be it will make her behave better.  Another friend said it's difficult for anyone to stomach her constant verbal abuse and that my mum belongs to the nursery for senior citizens; being in the "public eye" will force her to behave.

A brother's friend's wife (from Thailand) said she wouldn't expect my mum to be nice to her when she could not even respect her own daughter.  (She said this when she found out how calculative my mum got over some meat and groceries she placed in our fridge.  She and her husband rented a room from us for a good 3 months.  I guess she didn't like my mum that much.)

Ironically, it's thanks to her that I indirectly had a chance to have the boy** leave the household for good.  The super-naughty boy could not stand my mum at all!

A solution to prevent 'over-hogging" of CPU in webhosting environments

Finally understood what "overuse of CPU" means!  Excessive CPU usage by one or more clients causes extreme slowness in all areas: FTP, Telnet, Web Sites and more.  If the CPU usage gets too far out of hand, all sites hosted on the machine will return Errors and not be accessible in any way.

A friend told me,"Still, they should have warned you instead of suspending your webhosting account.  Not everyone is a computer-network expert!  It's only right they refund you your webhosting fees."

I said,"Yeah, they did say so - to refund me my annual webhosting fees in 'their next payment cycle'.since the wordpress themes I uploaded are worth way more than my webhosting fees, not to mention I was not allowed to retrieve a backup of my blog entries and comments.  I lost more than I will ever get back but at least the refund softens the damage somewhat."

Lesson learnt and I am sure my experience will save some from hosting headaches!

Never hog your wordpress admin control panel for more than 20 minutes per day if you can help it - only use your FTP to upload/delete/rename files!

You can do this by testing wordpress and php scripts by making your computer a server.  How?  Download the WAMP server which includes MySql and PhpMyAdmin.  Google for the latest version!
